Stop Trident – Vigil

Stop Trident – Vigil

On Sunday 21 February from 1.00 -2.00pm, Bury St Edmunds Quakers will hold a silent vigil outside Moyse’s Hall to protest against renewal of the Trident nuclear missile system.

Quakers have held a Testimony to Peace for over 350 years and we feel it important to witness today against these weapons of mass destruction. We believe that all human life is precious and that to rely on the possession of nuclear weapons as a deterrent is faithless, while to use them would be a sin.

The renewal of the Trident programme would initially cost approximately £31 billion, and will rise to more than £100 billion over the full period of its operation. At a time when so many vulnerable members of our society are suffering disproportionally from austerity economics, we hold this to be contrary to the Testimony to Equality, another of our core beliefs.

We welcome all who may feel moved to join us in this peaceful act of witness.
